Audition Information

Synopsis of Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry, adapted by Dr. Douglas W. Larche

During the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, the Nazis closed down Jewish-owned businesses and began to round up the Jews for relocation to concentration camps for the final solution. Danish freedom fighters of all ages risked everything in daring, hurried attempts to rescue the entire Jewish population. In this stirring new play, young Annemarie and Kirsti Johansen face soldiers, interrogations, fierce dogs, personal danger, the loss of loved ones and their own fears as they try to help their friend Ellen Rosen escape across the ocean to Sweden and safely. Courage, faith, ingenuity and even their fledgling acting skills eventually win the day. All the drama, pathos, adventure, terror and humor that have made Number the Stars a national best seller (and winner of the Newberry Award and the American Library Association Book of the Year Award) come to life in this powerful adaptation.

What Should I Expect At The Audition?

The director is looking for several things.  Some of those are imagination, energy, enthusiasm, stage presence, self-control, and the ability to take direction and get along with others.  When you get to the auditions, you’ll need to sign in with the stage manager.  The audition itself will consist of getting to know each other, exercising our imaginations, and reading from the script.  That’s about all there is to it!

Beginning the week of production we will be rehearsing where we will be performing.  A tentative Key Dates Calendar will be made available to you at the auditions. Some Saturdays may be scheduled for creating the other elements of the production including the scenery, costumes, and props. This information will be available on the Key Dates Calendar available at the auditions.

What If I Have Conflicts With The Schedule?

A tentative Key Dates Calendar is provided at the audition. You will be able to list all activities that conflict with the rehearsal schedule, especially those that cannot be moved or missed. The Director will do her best to honor scheduling conflicts if they are listed on your audition form.

We will e-mail everyone who auditioned to let them know the results of the casting. We will also post the cast list on the website: www.thesctc.org

What If I Would Rather Work backstage?

If you would rather work “behind the curtain” we have some exciting news for you! We are ready to help you learn the craft of theatre firsthand. On the audition form, fill out your information and look for the section where you can tell us what you would like to do.  We have lots of areas that you might like to learn such as scene design, makeup design, costume design and props.

Where can I get a copy of some of the audition readings?
We have included a selection of audition readings for you if you would like to prepare before-hand.  You do not need to have any of these memorized!  Click HERE for a downloadable PDF.
